The 1990 Original Book
The entire franchise began with the children's picture book Shrek! written and illustrated by legendary cartoonist William Steig.
In the original book, Shrek's design is far uglier and more grotesque than his later cinematic appearance. He possesses laser-beam fire breath and encounters entirely different characters.
